Composition Instruction

Weekly private lessons are offered in person and online.

Hatfield teaches composition through technique and demonstration, with work in counterpoint, analysis, keyboard improvisation, and aural skills. He organizes compositional technique into procedure and form: procedures include canon, invertible counterpoint, sequence, and fugue; forms include sonata, rondo, and aria. Chamber and vocal music are the primary media.

Theoretical concepts are studied through compositional application, including imitation and modeling drawn from masterworks. Students receive access to original teaching materials and instructional videos developed through his research and teaching.

The studio emphasizes live performance and recording. Through his professional network of performers, advanced students have the opportunity for readings, premieres, and recordings as their work develops.
